Cooling and Heating Season Impacts of Right-Sizing of Fixed- and Variable-Capacity Heat Pumps With Attic and Indoor Ductwork

A series of tests were conducted for full variable-capacity air-conditioning (A/C) and heat pump units. The tests evaluated both cooling and heating energy use of these heat pump units under a variety of conditions. Testing with attic ducts and indoor ducts were done for both SEER 13 and SEER 21/22 units. Both a 2-ton capacity unit and a 3-ton capacity unit were tested. There was some confounding in that the SEER 22 unit was 2-ton capacity and the SEER 21 unit was 3-ton capacity. The SEER 21/22 units also had a relative humidity control.
