East Liberty

  • Description: Overview: Pittsburgh Habitat for Humanity, constructed the three homes in their East Liberty urban infill project in Pittsburgh. Low-income families, meeting HFHI selection criteria, will own each home and donate their time to build their homes. Final completion of the homes is scheduled for March 2005.

Energy Efficiency Measures: To reach the project's energy efficiency goal, the pilot homes featured several advanced systems that Pittsburgh Habitat for Humanity had never before implemented in a project including: a basement insulation system that increases the thermal performance of the entire foundation wall; spray foam insulation system within wall cavities and in the attic; enhanced building airtightness; airtight and optimally sized air distribution system; optimally sized heating system equipment; and a mechanical ventilation system. The following is a detailed description of some of the advanced systems implemented in this pilot home, and the challenges and cost/performance implications to implementing these systems.
