Reducing Air Distribution in a Four-Bedroom Produc

This test house is projected to achieve 38% source energy savings relative to the Building America House Simulation Protocols (Hendron and Engebrecht 2010) and to achieve 51% source energy savings with the installed 2.0-kW photovoltaic (PV) system. The project included improvements to the thermal enclosure and space conditioning system over the builder?s standard product, with primary changes including elimination of the standard cathedralized attic system for a vented attic assembly and relocation of the space conditioning equipment and ductwork from the attic to conditioned area of the house. The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system improvements included the use of a balanced ventilation system with enthalpy recovery instead of the builder?s standard supply-only system without enthalpy recovery, as well as the replacement of a centrally ducted space conditioning system with a multi-head MSHP system consisting of minimally ducted, lower-capacity, and higher-efficiency air handlers distributed throughout the conditioned area of the house.
